The NDA was established in 1954, following the recommendation of the first Defense Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who felt the need for a Joint Services Academy in India. The first batch of cadets entered the NDA on 7th January 1955. The first Commandant of the NDA was Lieutenant General S. M. Shrinagesh. In the initial years, the NDA was located at the erstwhile British-era Military College of Engineering (MCE) campus in Dapodi, Pune. However, in 1963, the NDA was shifted to its present location at Khadakwasla, Pune.
